MusicReviewThis highly anticipated first album blends scorching lyrics and huge vocals with some jarringly by-numbers songs
Most of the time Charlton Howard is singing, he’s screaming. His ragged, adolescent voice has been frequently and correctly compared to the mournful cry of Post Malone, the defining sound of zillennial heartbreak for the better part of a decade. Unlike Post Malone, who sings through a glazed, pilled-out fugue, Howard – who records as the Kid Laroi, a nod to his Kamilaroi heritage – sounds as though he’s always pushing himself to the furthest possible limits: his voice strains, the volume peaks and the spectrum of emotions he’s trying to convey melts into toxic agony.

The ObserverMental healthWomen are always being told to control their emotions, but releasing them is far more important. Behavioural scientist Pragya Agarwal testifies that there’s nothing like a good screamOne afternoon in early lockdown I led my two small children into the garden and told them to scream. “Go on,” I said, setting a timer. “Scream as loud as you want. I’ll join you.” We’d been in the house, socially distanced for more than a month by then.

Taylor Swift: Speak Now (Taylors Version) review re-recording project starting to feel wearyi
Taylor SwiftReview(Republic)
The latest of Swift’s re-recorded albums suffers from the loss of her youthful voice – as well as her decision to alter lyrics out of step with today’s sensibilities
Originally released in 2010, Speak Now was the first Taylor Swift album to go studs up, foregrounding the combative spirit that would come to define her. It is to date her only entirely self-written record, her attempt to vanquish critics who had credited her co-writers with the success of her first two albums.
