His gritty, urgent lead vocal was in dramatic contrast to the sweeter tones of the singer he replaced, David Ruffin, and was perfect for tough and funky songs such as Cloud Nine (1968), the apocalyptic Ball of Confusion (1970) and the 1972 US chart-topper Papa Was a Rollin’ Stone.
